China/UNFPA HIV/AIDS and Reproductive Health Project
China/UNFPA HIV/AIDS and Reproductive Health Project is jointly developed by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and China Ministry of Health (MoH), aiming to strengthen HIV/AIDS prevention and control through reproductive health services.
The majority of HIV infections around the globe are due to sexual transmission or related to pregnancy, parturition or breast-feeding. The interactions between HIV infection and reproductive health have been widely recognized internationally. It is widely understood that strengthening the linkage between HIV prevention and reproductive health services can reduce HIV prevalence.
Currently HIV/AIDS prevalence in China mainly concentrate in injecting drug users (IDUs), sex worker (SWs) and men who have sex with men (MSM), and spread primarily via sexual transmission from high risk groups to the general population. Therefore, it is necessary to HIV/AIDS control in China to strengthen the linkage between HIV prevention and reproductive health.
Implementing the project conforms to the goal of the China Action Plan to HIV/AIDS Control and Prevent (2006-2010). It is one of the objectives of both the project and the Plan to enhance the accessibility of HIV VCT and referral (VCT/VCR) services, including VCT/VCR at maternal & child health (MCH) institutions and standardized STI diagnosis, treatment and management.
Meanwhile, the project contributes to the realization of the MDG 6 of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) "Fight HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other Diseases".
China/UNFPA HIV/AIDS control and Reproductive Health Project has a total budget of USD 720,000 from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2010-12-31. Project areas include Jilin, Hainan and Guizhou. Project components include outreach services, peer education, condom promotion and use, STI management, VCT, multi-sectoral cooperation and leadership development. Target populations include medical staff, government officials, CSWs, young people, leaders, the general public and others.
